Our training and development department is responsible for taking business to the
next level, equipping each of our 2.1 million associates with the knowledge they
need to jump in and execute a strategy – sometimes at a moment’s notice. Founder
Sam Walton firmly believed in the importance of communication and in treating associates
as active partners in building our business. As a military captain, he also subscribed
to the benefits of rigorous and specialized training, and built a company of leaders
on such continuous instruction. In the world’s largest retailer, the training and
development department is responsible for preparing and keeping our associates informed
of day-to-day operations, what hot-button issues affect the company, and any new
developments that may require them to quickly change their focus. We also answer
media questions, fielding calls and emails from all over the world to drive home
the values and purpose of our company and our mission.
